Intermediate Swim Lessons
Focus on Stroke Development

Two Intermediate Levels build on the foundation established in Beginner lessons, focusing on refining technique and introducing new deepwater skills. With increased confidence and independence, swimmers refine techniques and build endurance for greater proficiency in both freestyle and backstroke.

Key Skills Covered:

  • Developing Freestyle Stroke
    • Introduced to side breathing technique
    • Refining arm and kick technique
    • Building endurance for increased distance
  • Developing Backstroke
    • Improving backstroke kicks - whip and flutter kicks
    • Increased floating times for rest and safety
    • Building Endurance & Confidence
  • New Skills this Level:
    • Diving
    • Rhythmic Bilateral Side Breathing
    • Backstroke (Elementary and Competitive)
    • Treading Water
    • Endurance (Swimming Multiple Laps)
  • Safety
    • Focus on deep water safety skills and increasing swim distance
  • Age Range
    • Typically at least 6 years old and promoted from Beginner 2 level
    • Occasionally students aged 4-5 who started swimming early and have been consistently in lessons will progress to this level

Class Levels:


Intermediate 1
Focuses on transitioning from rollover style breathing to side breathing freestyle technique. Refining the gross motor skills in the arms and kicks, building knowledge on body position underwater, increasing swim distance and deep water comfort.
Young Student Swimming Freestyle

  • Prerequisites for this Level:
    • Swim 30 yards (1 Lap Down and Back) continuous front crawl
    • Rhythmic Rollover Breathing
    • Elementary Backstroke to rest as needed
  • Skill Accomplishments upon Completion of this level:
    • Ready to promote to Intermediate 2
    • Swim 2 laps (60 yards) continuous freestyle with good side breathing technique
    • Swim 1 lap (30 yards) elementary backstroke
    • Tread water for 30 seconds
    • Streamline starts off the wall
    • Developing technique for standing dives
    • Good knowledge of swimming terms and skills
    • Complete confidence in deep water


Intermediate 2
Focuses on transitioning from unilateral (1 side) non-rhythmic side breathing to proper bilateral (both sides) rhythmic breathing freestyle technique. Refine and improve technique in the gross motor skills for competitive style backstroke.
Young Student Swimming Backstroke


  • Prerequisites for this Level:
    • Swim 60 yards (2 Laps Down and Back) continuous Freestyle with unilateral side breathing
    • Swim 30 yards (1 Lap Down and Back) Elementary Backstroke with whip kick
    • Tread water 30 seconds
    • Complete deep water confidence
  • Skill Accomplishments upon Completion of this level:
    • Ready to promote to Advanced 1
    • Swim 3 laps (100 yards) continuous freestyle with good bilateral side breathing technique
    • Swim 2 laps (60 yards) competitive style backstroke
    • Tread water for 1 minute using more than 1 kick style
    • Increased distance and perfected technique for underwater streamlines
    • Building confidence with standing dives
    • Good knowledge of swimming terms and skills
