Lifeguarding Classes At OWA

Lifeguards are aquatic safety professionals in charge of preventing injuries, responding to and managing from minor to major incidents. This is a rewarding and empowering skill set. Become a lifeguard for temporary employment, as the basis for an aquatic career, as a hobby, or simply to feel best prepared to assist others in and around water. You may become a lifeguard beginning as of age 15 and older. We are very fortunate to have Melissa Shearer as our full time Lifeguard Trainer. This is a complete certification course utilizing the Newly Updated American Red Cross Standards, which includes Lifeguarding; a 3 year certification, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; a 1 year certification, and First Aid; a 3 year certification. New Feature...
Meet the OWA Family
Have you met Russell Leader? Russell is an Open Water and Scuba Rangers Instructor at OWA. He and his now wife Mel came to us in 2005 as new clients and quickly became a regular fixture on many of our trips and functions. His excitement for diving has led him to since become an Instructor. Russell enjoys families and especially introducing children to scuba. He is now a Scuba Ranger instructor showing the youngest divers how to enjoy this sport. In 2006 Russell and Mel got married in Bonaire on an OWA trip. Their witnesses were OWA family members they have become close to since joining our family. Russell is a favorite trip leader, instructor, and dive buddy among those who have come to know him. Thank you Russell, (and MEL, for letting him and joining him) for all you do to further the sport we all love in such a positive way.

New Feature!
Creature Feature
Every month we will focus on introducing you to a new sea citizen. We hope to educate, heighten your interest in what you might see, and inspire you to protect the oceans for the health of our planet and future generations.
Meet Stanley...he is a Nassau Grouper. Stanley is internationally famous for his antics interacting with divers. This species of grouper are known for their inquisitive nature and personality. Stanely acts much like a dog or maybe even a parrot. He resides at a coral head on the dive site Bull Run in Bahamas just south of Bimini. This site is more famous for its resident Caribbean Reef sharks, but Stanley is doing his part to hog all the attention. He will follow divers all over the area, push his snout right in your camera lens to interrupt your focus and spread his profile around the world. He will lay on his side in the sand and ask for a rub down, posture his underside right up to your face for a chin scratch, and many other behaviors that entertain us all. According to National Geographic and our own observations this unique and important reef resident is in serious danger from over fishing. For more information see this link...http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/03/0304_030304_belizefish.html and http://www.nationalgeographic.com/field/explorers/enric-sala.html. To meet Stanley you need only join OWA on any Juliet Bahamas adventure. In 2008 we have four of these, April Ladies Only Trip, May 5 Day, June Week long, and Four days in October. See the OWA trip page for The Juliet and become one of the many fans of this majestic ship and a new fan of Stanley!
